Fernando Martins
Performer, Director, Scenographer, Mask Sculptor and Physical and Visual Theater Trainer
Fernando Martins is a professor, actor, director, set designer, sculptor of theatrical masks, and holds a degree in Philosophy from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). In Italy, he studied at the Scuola Grassi and with mask sculptors Donato Sartori and Paolo Trombetta from the Centro Maschere e Strutture Gestuali, with whom he has developed intense artistic collaboration. Has participated in the Stage Internazionale di Commedia dell'Arte with Antonio Fava and has completed the Laboratorio Internazionale di Commedia dell’Arte (2014) with Fabio Mangolini. He has taken specialization courses with Ferruccio Soleri and Giorgio Bongiovanni (Italy), Floriana Frassetto (Switzerland), Pascale Lecoq (France), Dario Fo (Italy), Marise Flach (Italy), Thomas Leabhart (USA), and others.
He is currently a lecturer at the Escuela Universitaria TAI/ Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Madrid, Spain). He has taught courses and workshops at important institutions such as the University of São Paulo (BRA), University of Campinas (BRA), Cia. de Teatro de Jundiaí (BRA), Usina das Artes (BRA), Pomona College (USA), Bogotá Theater Festival (COL), Accademia Toscana (IT), Movement School (USA), Cariri Mask Festival (BRA), Inimpetus (PT), Irreverent Festival (PT), Mime Festival (UK), Mumbai Theater Festival (IND), Festival d'Avignon (FRA), Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes (FRA), among others. At Doutores da Alegria, he has been a teacher of commedia dell'arte and human comedy - PFPJ (Training Program for Young Clowns/2014-2019). He creates and manufactures leather masks for actors and theater schools in Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Israel, the United States, Brazil, India, and Japan.
In 2010, motivated by Donato Sartori, he created the Mask Research Center (Centro de Pesquisa da Máscara), a multidisciplinary cultural center dedicated to practical-theoretical research, training, dissemination, and creation of works around the universe of theatrical masks. The center has facilitated various international artistic exchanges with masters from all continents. In 2020, the center began developing permanent activities in Portugal and Spain, where it currently has its headquarters. As an actor, director, set designer, and mask creator, he has participated in a dozen repertoire shows with wide circulation in America and Europe, such as:
"Larvatum Homines" (technical demonstration with masks), "O Rei do Cais" (commedia dell'arte), "Monotrux" (clown), "Misterio en la pocilga" (commedia dell'arte), "Intriga de Amor" (commedia dell'arte), "Los Ladrones del Puerto" (commedia dell'arte), "Pequeño Mundo" (larval masks), “A quinta dos Animais” (gestural theater), "Diario de un Pájaro" (human comedy), among others. At the Mask Research Center, he is the pedagogical coordinator and trainer for the annual activities: Training through the Mask and the International Laboratory for Creation and Crafting of Leather Masks, which have trained over 150 professionals from various parts of the world.
